What is iGEM?

iGEM TU Eindhoven participates in an annual international competition where thousands of students from around the world design and build synthetic biological systems. The competition is a unique opportunity to develop your skills, collaborate with diverse talents, and make a positive impact on society.

We are still looking for team members for 2025. Do you have experience with programming or data science and do you want to apply these skills to real problems? Apply on the contact page.

What is synthetic biology?

Synthetic biology combines engineering principles with biology to design and build new biological parts, devices, and systems, or to redesign existing natural biological systems for useful purposes. It's essentially programming life to solve human problems. Some examples:

The iGEM timeline

The iGEM timeline is from February until November and ends at the Grand Jamboree in Paris.

Project Ideation

February until April

The project ideation phase runs part-time, where we formulate and research potential project ideas. This involves literature research, brainstorming sessions, and feasibility studies to identify a project with significant impact.

Lab Work & Development

April until August

This is the main execution phase where we conduct laboratory experiments, develop software solutions, and contact stakeholders to gather feedback and build partnerships for our project.

Events & Outreach

September

We organize various events to engage with the community and share our project. These include workshops, presentations, and collaborative activities with other teams. We organize the Challenge Day and Mini Jamboree around this time.

Documentation & Finalization

September until October

We document everything on the wiki, finalize our experiments, and prepare all deliverables for the competition including the project video and presentation.

Grand Jamboree

October

The Grand Jamboree in Paris is the culmination of our work, where we present our project to judges and other teams from around the world, competing for medals and special prizes.

Recruitment

January

We work on recruiting students from various disciplines at TU/e to form the next team. This ensures knowledge transfer and continuation of the iGEM tradition at our university.

Different roles

The team generally consists of eight roles. While everyone contributes together towards the end goal, these are the main responsibilities. Curious who is doing what? Check out the team page.

I have been interested in iGEM for quite some time during my bachelor's. However, I never got the chance to properly combine it with my courses. Now that I'm more flexible in my masters, I have used the opportunity to finally work in this groundbreaking community! 🔬💚
